When the Buddha began turning the Wheel the Dharma in ancient India, he did so purely and freely, sharing his boundless wisdom with equanimity towards all. As the dharma spread, the monastic community grew and with it, support from lay members of society. Through the ages, both groups have been intertwined in networks of mutual respect and aid, each knowing their cooperation strengthens the message of the Dharma.
